East Asia

Population: Around 1.4 billion. Some areas are extremely overpopulated while others have a very low population density.

Main religions:

Large parts of East Asia are officially atheist, but religions such as Buddhism, Shamanism and Taoism are also widespread. Christianity has been growing in this region at an amazing rate and estimates of the numbers of Christians in the region range from 50 million to 100 million.  Nevertheless, it remains the case that Christians are persecuted in some areas while in others the church has the freedom to worship openly. There is a significant number of Muslims in the region, particularly in the north-west.

Examples of Interserve projects in the region:

Engineering, forestry, teaching English as a foreign language, business, education, student work, healthcare, business and community development.

Pray

  1. •Pray for the Christians to develop a strong sense of identity with Christ and a willingness to suffer.

  2. •Pray that countries that now persecute Christians would relax their concerns and that the church would have freedom to worship openly.

  3. •Pray that existing churches would develop a vision to reach out to serve other people groups near them.
